Joseph Lanis served with the 2nd Light Cavalry Regiment during the German invasion in May 1940. He escaped to Spain in September 1941, where he spend a year in an internment camp before finally arriving in England.

After joining the RAF, Lanis was sent to an Elementary Flying Training School in Alberta, Canada, and was killed in a training accident along the Canadian-US border. He was buried at Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat (see Joseph Lanis) until his remains were returned back home in the 1960's.
